Stevens and Carver families – Can anyone help?

I have just retired to Fittleworth and am interested in my family roots. My great grandfather married his wife Martha Stevens who was born in 1846 in Lodsworth. She was the daughter of William Stevens and Jane Carver. They married in Tillington but lived the rest of their lives in Leggatt Hill, William being a gamekeeper there. They are buried with headstones in the Lodsworth churchyard. William Stevens had a brother James who was married to Mary Ann Boxall and married in the village in 1853. The family lived in Church Lane and Vicarage Lane.

I have an old photo taken c.1901 showing James Stevens at a family gathering at Lodsworth. He is holding a ladder up the side of his house whilst his son-in-law is picking his ‘Violet Pator Plums’.

Thus I am related to the Stevens and Carver families and would love to be put in touch with anyone who might remember the families. The Carver family I know is very large but I do have George Thomas Carver known as ‘Ratty’ in my tree. I have a picture of him drinking at the bar in the Hollist Arms.

  1. Hello Carol:
I’ve been researching my Carver family origins since my retirement and wonder if we are connected through George Carver (my 3rd great grandfather) who was born in the Lodsworth parish in 1776 and who died in January, 1845, in his Easebourne cottage. My wife and I plan to visit the area this coming April.
You can find my research on ancestry.com
    My best wishes,

Hi I have been researching the Carver family tree for my brother-in-law Osmond Carver who’s father was Harry and his father was George born 1864 in Tillington. I also have a Mary Ann Boxall in the family. I have a photo of a wedding on the front of this site wanting information from anyone. I haven’t got Osmonds (curly) email address but we can sort something out if you want. Regards Brian Bales

It’s just over 3 years since your inquiry and hope you are still in contact with the Society.
I am a descendant of Henry Stevens – William’s younger brother. Their father was George Stevens born in Lodsworth in 1793. I can share a photograph of him.

    kind regards

    HI,

I am a descendant of James Stevens and Mary Boxall – they are my 3rd Great Grandparents.

Are you still on this forum as we have no pictures of James or George at all so it would be wonderful to see them. James’ son Thomas moved his family away from Lodsworth but we are hoping to visit in the very near future.

It would be really great if there were people on this post who might be happy to share stories about the families.

    regards,
    Andrea
